  • Dietitians are highly trained health professionals with a minimum 4-year university degree in nutrition and dietetics, plus supervised practice. In Australia, they are regulated by Dietitians Australia and must maintain ongoing professional development to hold the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential. Dietitians can provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy for conditions like diabetes, IBS, and food allergies.

Nutritionists focus on general nutrition advice and healthy eating. However, the term "nutritionist" isn’t regulated in Australia, and qualifications can vary widely. For managing health conditions, it’s best to consult an APD.

For more information please refere to Seeing a Dietitan in Australia/What to Expect.

  • If you book and pay online, you will receive an automatic payment receipt at the time of booking. However, an official dietetics invoice will be issued after your consultation is completed.

This invoice can be used for:

    • Private health insurance claims (if applicable).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Ideally yes, completing a food diary is highly recommended! Tracking what you eat and drink for at least 3 days before your appointment helps us better understand your eating habits, portion sizes, and lifestyle.

It saves time during your session, allowing us to focus on personalised advice and creating an action plan tailored to your needs.

If your food diary is completed in advance, we can spend more time in your session focusing on personalised strategies and solutions rather than gathering basic dietary details.

  • Our intake form is a short online form we’ll ask you to complete before your appointment. It collects key information about your medical history, lifestyle, dietary habits, and goals.

By filling it out beforehand, you’ll help us prepare for your session and ensure we can provide personalised advice that meets your needs.

  • Blood tests are not required for your consultation, but if you have recent results, sharing them in advance can provide valuable insights into your health. This allows us to better tailor your nutrition recommendations.

Some tests that can help guide dietary advice include:

    • Iron studies – To assess iron levels and risk of deficiency.

    • Vitamin D levels – Important for bone health, immunity, and energy.

    • Cholesterol & lipid profile – Helps manage heart health.

    • Blood glucose & insulin levels – Useful for diabetes prevention and management.

    • Thyroid function tests – To assess metabolism and energy levels.

    • B12 & folate – Essential for red blood cell production and nerve health.

If you don’t have recent blood tests, that’s okay!

While blood tests can provide additional insights, they are not required for a consultation. If testing is recommended based on your symptoms or health history, we can discuss this as part of your nutrition plan.

📌 Tip: If you have existing blood test results, you can email them before your consultation, so we can review them in advance.

  • Dietitians cannot order blood tests directly, but we can suggest relevant tests for you to discuss with your GP. If needed, we can provide guidance on what to request.

Before my Appointment

  • Your consultation is structured to assess your health, provide expert nutrition guidance, and develop a plan tailored to your needs.

    • Understanding Your Goals – We start by identifying your main health concerns and what you want to achieve.

    • Medical & Health Review – We assess your medical history, family health risks, medications, and supplements.

    • Diet & Lifestyle Assessment – We take a detailed diet history, reviewing what you typically eat in a day over the course of 3 to 7 days. If you’ve completed your food diary, this streamlines the process, allowing more time for tailored recommendations.

    • Personalised Nutrition Strategy – Evidence-based guidance tailored to your lifestyle and goals. If you’ve chosen the Healthy Ageing Package, your session will incorporate strategies from Small Steps, Big Changes.

    • Action Plan – You’ll leave with practical, achievable steps to start making meaningful changes right away.

Consults are conducted via secure video call by Halay Telehealth. Completing your food diary before your session will help maximise the time spent on personalised strategies.

  • Absolutely! Your consultation is a collaborative process—we encourage you to ask questions so you feel confident in your nutrition plan.

During my Consultation

  • Following your session, you will receive an email summary of key recommendations, along with any relevant resources to support your next steps. This may include meal planning guidance, nutrition tips, or educational handouts tailored to your needs. An official invoice, which can be used for Medicare or private health insurance claims.

Emails are sent within 1 business day of your consultation.

  • Yes. Follow-up sessions are essential for tracking progress, refining strategies, and providing ongoing support. Research shows that multiple dietetic sessions lead to better health outcomes by helping individuals achieve sustainable, long-term changes

Dietitians Australia has highlighted the need for greater access to dietetic care, noting that the current Medicare allowance of five sessions per year may not meet best-practice recommendations (Dietitians Australia, 2024). This reinforces the importance of ongoing support beyond a single session.

Standard Consultations: Committment to one to two follow-up sessions are strongly recommended, depending on your needs and goals.

We understand the importance of support in achieving meaningful, lasting change. That’s why we offer structured packages to help you maintain progress:

    • The Healthy Ageing Package includes built-in follow-ups to provide guidance at key stages of your journey.

    • The Seasonal Health Maintenance Package is available for existing clients who have completed the Healthy Ageing Package and want ongoing quarterly check-ins to prioritise their health year-round.

Follow-ups ensure your nutrition plan continues to align with your evolving needs, providing the guidance and accountability needed to build lasting habits.

  • If your GP has provided you with a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for dietitian consultations. Here's how the process works:

    1. Payment: At the time of booking your consultation, full payment is required upfront. You'll receive a payment receipt immediately upon payment.

    2. Rebate Processing: After your appointment, we will process your Medicare rebate on your behalf.

    3. Rebate Deposit: Medicare will deposit the rebate directly into your nominated bank account, typically within 24–48 hours.

Important: To receive your rebate, ensure your bank details are registered with Medicare. You can update these via myGov, the Medicare app, or by contacting Medicare directly.

    Alternative Claiming Methods:

    • If your bank details are not registered with Medicare or if you prefer to claim the rebate yourself, you can do so through the following methods:

      • Online: Submit your claim via your Medicare online account through myGov.

      • Mobile App: Use the Express Plus Medicare mobile app to lodge your claim.

      • By Mail: Complete a Medicare claim form and mail it, along with your invoice and receipt, to the address provided on the form.

      • In Person: Visit a Medicare Service Centre to submit your claim directly.

For more detailed information on these alternative claiming methods, please refer to the Services Australia website.
